Manitoba truckers support cellphone ban
Manitoba’s plan to crack down on drivers using handheld cellphones has the backing of the province’s trucking association. The cellphone ban, announced in Thursday’s throne speech, will make it illegal for drivers to talk or send text messages while they are behind the wheel.
Truckers not only support the ban, but they hope the province expands it to include other devices that distract people while they are driving, said Bob Dolyniuk, general manager of the Manitoba Trucking Association.
“We’re hoping that the legislation will be broad enough to not only ban the use of handheld cellphones, but also entertainment devices and gaming devices,” he said.
Drivers should not be allowed to watch videos, read, eat or do anything else that takes their attention away from the road, he said.
However, the legislation should allow hands-free devices used by many truckers and other commercial drivers on the road, he said.
