Non-farm payrolls lost 79,600 jobs in February, with manufacturing taking the worst hit, Statistics Canada reports. The agency said those losses continue a slump that began last October and which has cost 296,000 jobs. The number of Canadians getting employment insurance benefits grew in February by 44,300, or 7.8 per cent, when compared to the previous month, Statistics Canada said Tuesday. Since job growth wilted beginning in October 2008, the number of regular EI beneficiaries has climbed 21.9 per cent to hit 610,200 in February.

Canada’s annual rate of inflation for March came in at 1.2 per cent, down from the 1.4 per cent increase in February, Statistics Canada said. The March 09 rate was slightly tamer than the 1.4 per cent annualized inflation rate that economists had been projecting.
