CFB Trenton prepares for C17 aircraft

hood_col_mar_07Colonel Mike Hood who is the Base Commander at CFB Trenton in Quinte, Ontario recently spoke of some exciting changes taking place at the base. Unfortunately, CFB Trenton is known throughout Canada as the place where our courageous solders return for repatriation ceremonies before taking their final journey along the Highway of Heroes to Toronto. But there is far more to the base than this sad fact.

Millions of dollars are being spent on CFB Trenton to upgrade the taxiways and build a new training centre amongst other things.

The new C17 aircraft will be arriving this summer and ramps and taxiways needed to be upgraded to accommodate it. A new hanger for the aircraft is also being built in order to perform maintenance. Over $110 million is being spend at the base just for the C17. Colonel Hood said, “It is the largest project in DND history.”

Over the next six months two existing hangers built back in the 1930’s will be torn down and replaced by two new hangers large enough to accommodate the C17. The file hall is being replaced so that larger trucks can be housed. Hood said, “ They need to be bigger in order to reach the tails of the C17’s. We will also be relocating the fire hall to the middle of the runway to allow quicker access to the aircraft.” A new control tower is also on the agenda at a cost of $10.5 million and will be completed this year.

In July the base will be celebrating several big landmarks in aviation history: 100th anniversary of flight in Canada, the 85th anniversary of the Air Force, the 40th anniversary of 8 Air Communication and Control Squadron, the 60th anniversary of the British Commonwealth Training Plan Gates and the 25th anniversary of the National Air Force Museum of Canada. A two-day event is planned to celebrate all these milestones and everyone is invited to share in the festivities on July 4th – 5th.  The famous Snowbids, SkyHawks and CF-18 Demo teams will perform in the skies and lots more aircraft will be available to view. Lots of other entertainment will be on hand to make it a great family event for all. Best of all, entrance is free.

Hood also mentioned that the Canadian Forces Air Welfare Centre which moved to CFB Trenton eighteen months ago will finally be completed this fall at a total cost of $20 million

Nice to see the PC government is helping make the Canadian DND something to be proud of, with all this money going into the upgarde of the Trenton base only good things will come of it. It’s also great to see the C-17′s flying for our country we have needed these planes for the longest time!
