Canada Day, the flag, armed forces and hockey are still regarded as the biggest sources of national pride

CanadadayflagIn the annual Angus Reid Canada Day poll, the country’s flag, armed forces and hockey are still regarded as the biggest sources of national pride. The online survey of a representative national sample of 1,000 Canadians shows growth for most of the 12 assessed sources of pride, with the health care system and the state of democracy in Canada experiencing marked surges.

As was the case in 2008, 86 per cent of respondents say the Canadian flag makes them “very proud” or “moderately proud.” The Canadian Armed Forces are second on the list (84%, +4) followed by hockey (72%, +1), multiculturalism (64%, +3) and the state of democracy in Canada (64%, +7).

Men are more likely than women to regard hockey as a source of pride (78% to 66%), and women are more likely than men to cite the state of democracy in Canada (67% to 61%).

The opinions on multiculturalism vary greatly by age, with respondents aged 18 to 34 (73%) feeling more pride than respondents aged 35 to 54 (65%) and those over the age of 55 (56%).

More than half of respondents believe four other features are a source of pride for them: the Canadian economy (58%, -4), the health care system (58%, +8), bilingualism (54%, +2), and Aboriginal culture (53%, +2).

The economy was the only area to show a decline since last year. Middle aged Canadians were less likely than younger and older Canadians to cite health care as a source of pride (49%), while younger respondents (60%) appear more satisfied with bilingualism.

Three features are at the bottom of the list for the second year in a row, but show some growth: the Canadian justice system (42%, +3), the Monarchy (42%, +6), and Parliament (37%, +5).

When it comes to the Monarchy, pride the level of pride according to age and household income, reaching a high of 47 per cent among those aged 55 or older, and those living in households earning $100,000 or more.

The regional breakdown shows a remarkable variation between Ontario and Quebec on specific issues. While 70 per cent of Ontarians say the health care system makes them proud, only 39 per cent of Quebecers agree. And while 55 per cent of Ontarians cite the Monarchy as a source of pride, only 16 per cent of Quebecers concur.
