Canadians and Americans agree on banning plastic bags

banbagsCanadians and Americans hold very similar views about the future of the plastic shopping bag, a two-country Angus Reid Strategies poll has found. In the online survey of representative national samples of 1,004 Canadians and 1,000 Americans, a large majority of respondents in both countries (60% in the United States and 76% in Canada) support an outright ban on the use of plastic shopping bags in the city or town where they live.

Canadians are, however, more enthusiastic than their American counterparts about this initiative. While 50 per cent of respondents in Canada are strongly supportive of banning plastic shopping bags, this is true for only 29 per cent of respondents in the U.S.

People in Canada are less bothered by the idea of paying an extra fee when requesting a plastic bag at a store than people in the U.S. Two-thirds of Canadians (67%) see no problem with this practice. In the United States, only 32 per cent of respondents accept the surcharge.
