Prepare for peak of hurricane season says Newfoundland & Labrador minister

repare for peak of hurricane season says Newfoundland & Labrador minister

The Newfoundland and Labrador government is urging residents to prepare for the peak of hurricane season.

Dianne Whalen, minister responsible for emergency preparedness, says that on average, one to two storms have an impact on Canada every year.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre has predicted an active season in the Atlantic region with three to seven major hurricanes anticipated.

Whalen says it’s important for residents to take precautions to avoid the destruction that can be caused by heavy rains, high winds and power outages.

The minister says residents should remove dead tree branches, ensure sump pumps are working, remove debris from drains and clean out window and door wells.

As well, she says residents should prepare an emergency kit, secure patio furniture and barbecue equipment, charge cellphones and buy fresh batteries for portable radios.
